The Tha Chin River Basin

The Tha Chin River is the major tributary of the Chao Phraya and has many regional names. After it splits from the Chao Phraya at Chainat, it's called Klong Makhamthao Canal; while passing Suphan Buri it is the Suphan River; while passing Nakhon Pathom it becomes the Nakhon Chaisi river. Only near its mouth at Samut Sakhon it is named the Tha Chin River.

แม่น้ำท่าจีนเป็นสาขาของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาซึ่งมีชื่อเรียกแตกต่างกันออกไปตามพื้นที่ซึ่งแม่น้ำสายนี้ไหลผ่าน ช่วงต้นน้ำบริเวณเมืองชัยนาท เรียกว่า คลองมะขามเฒ่า ช่วงที่ไหลผ่าน จ.สุพรรณบุรี เรียกว่า แม่น้ำสุพรรณ ช่วงที่ไหลผ่าน จ.นครปฐม เรียกว่า แม่น้ำนครชัยศรี จนมาถึงช่วงปลายน้ำบริเวณ จ.สมุทรสาคร จึงเรียกว่า แม่น้ำท่าจีน

The Tha Chin River Basin is the second most important basin in Thailand. Its geography is flat, intensively used area mostly by agriculture, livestock, industry and urban communities, covering 12,000 sq.km. with the lower river basin connected to the Mae Klong River Basin around Nakhon Pathom province. It is draining the western part of the Central Plain regions to enter the Gulf of Thailand some 60km east of Bangkok at Samut Sakon Province. During the rainy season, Tha Chin River Basin has to receive all surplus water threatening Bangkok Metropolitan Area through Chao Phraya River floods.

ลุ่มแม่น้ำท่าจีนเป็นที่ราบลุ่มซึ่งสำคัญเป็นอันดับสองของประเทศ หล่อเลี้ยงพื้นที่การเกษตร ปศุสัตว์ โรงงานอุตสาหกรรม และชุมชนเมืองบนเนื้อที่ราว 12,000 ตร.กม. โดยบริเวณตอนล่างติดต่อกับลุ่มแม่น้ำแม่กลอง ใช้เป็นทางระบายน้ำของซีกตะวันตกจากพื้นที่ภาคกลางลงสู่อ่าวไทยที่ จ.สมุทรสาคร ช่วยไม่ให้นำท่วมกรุงเทพมหานครในช่วงฤดูฝน

Even though water quality of the Tha Chin has deteriorated significantly over the past two decades, largely as a result of waste inputs from municipal sewage, agricultural activities, and industrial operations, but the upper part of the river in Chainat from Amphoe Wat Sing to Amphoe Hankha the river’s water quality still unpolluted. With its numerous natural and artificial channels, the Tha Chin separates slowly from the Chao Phraya river which begins at the famous Wat Phakklong Makhamtao then passes through several old communities along the way. At the widest section of the river about 25km from downtown Chainat, visitors can get the glimpse of the riverside century-old market at the center of Amphoe Hankha district where the charming wooden shophouses line an alley. Talat Hankha offers foreign tourists a chance to taste delicacies rarely served in tourist areas. Several old noodle shops, some serve local style coffee strained through sock filters,overlooking riverine life of the Tha Chin.

แม้หลายช่วงของแม่น้ำท่าจีนจะมีสารพิษจากโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมและน้ำเน่าเสีย แต่ช่วงต้นน้ำบริเวณจังหวัดชัยนาทตั้งแต่ อ.วัดสิงห์ จนถึง อ.หันคานั้น คุณภาพน้ำยังดีอยู่ อีกทั้งยังมีวิถีชีวิตดั้งเดิมของชุมชนริมน้ำให้ผู้มาเยี่ยมเยือนได้สัมผัส โดยเฉพาะบริเวณหน้าตลาดเก่า อ.หันคา ซึ่งแม่น้ำมีความกว้างและสวยงามที่สุดช่วงหนึ่ง นอกจากเรือนแถวไม้แบบโบราณปลูกติดๆกันสองข้างทางเดินแล้ว นักท่องเที่ยวจะได้อิ่มอร่อยกับอาหารพื้นบ้านสูตรเด็ด 'หมูสะเต๊ะ' ‘ก๋วยเตี๋ยวต้มยำ’ ของชาวชัยนาท พร้อมกับดื่มกาแฟโบราณ ขณะชื่นชมกับทิวทัศน์สองฝั่งแม่นำท่าจีน

The market was built to face the river, so the quaint water frontage of Talat Hankha is quite photogenic. If sampling regional specialties is your favorite pastime, a visit to Talat Hankha can take an hour or two depending on how much you eat and photograph the whole community. Much of the appeal lies in watching vendors prepare the dishes. At Talat Hankha, the local community is making the effort to develop this old riverside market into a sustainable tourist attraction.

It makes an easy day-trip in combination with surrounding attractions focusing on traditional Thai lifestyles. These include feed school of fish at Wat Tha Kridsana, see deeryard and thousand of peacocks at Wat Khao Sarapaddee, visit beautiful Thai house made from Golden Teak wood at Wat Nong Tharapu and explore lakeside mini-zoo and wonderful aquariums at Bueng Chawak Lake which is only 15km away from Talat Hankha.

ตลาดเก่า อ.หันคา มีมุมสวยๆให้ถ่ายรูปกัน พร้อมกับโอกาสจะได้ชิมอาหารพื้นบ้าน โดยใช้เวลาท่องเที่ยวประมาณ 1-2 ชม. หรือจะใช้เวลาทั้งวันสำรวจแหล่งท่องเที่ยวใกล้เคียงต่างๆ อาทิ เลี้ยงปลาในวังมัจฉาหน้าวัดท่ากฤษณา ชมฝูงกวาง และนกยูงนับพันตัวที่วัดเขาสารพัดดี เยี่ยมชมบ้านทรงไทยหลังใหญ่สร้างด้วยไม้สักทองที่วัดหนองทาระภู และเที่ยวสวนสัตว์ริมบึง พิพิธภัณฑ์สัตว์นำจืดนำเค็มที่บึงฉวากเฉลิมพระเกียรติ ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากตลาดหันคาเพียง 15 กม.
